permAfrost follows an integrative approach across various spatial scales, linking the climate signal, geomorphological process and hydrological effect in order to improve our understanding of the impact of climate change on permafrost and its consequential thawing.
permAfrost is a consortium of four originally independent research projects within the framework of Alpine Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. An integrative approach encompassing the entire climate – permafrost – hazard system as it is aimed for in the Austrian Permafrost Research Initative is prerequisite for scientifically coherent results, which will be acknowledged and taken up by the international scientific community. The principal motivation for the integration of all relevant permafrost research groups in Austria ist the bundling of synergies and thereby the common goal of furthering permafrost research in one of the most important countries in mountain regions in the world.
